Dom Pedro Golf Vilamoura renovates the iconic Old Course

Dom Pedro Golf Vilamoura, recently awarded by IAGTO as the 2024 Golf Resort in Portugal, is carrying out an extensive renovation of the iconic Old Course to consolidate its place among the best golf courses in Europe.

As a result of the renovations, the Old Course will be transformed into a premium golf club, with personalized service, VIP concierge and world-class playing conditions. Within the camp, improvements have focused on sustainability, as part of a new long-term strategy to make it one of the greenest camps in Europe. Of particular note are the new sprinkler systems and water-resistant grass varieties to reduce consumption, the hydropressor stations to reduce energy consumption and the new fleet of 100% electric machines.

The changes are being implemented without shutting down the field, minimizing the impact and putting the customer experience first. These improvements should be completed by the end of August.

Nuno Sepúlveda, Co-CEO of DETAILS – Hospitality, Sports, Leisure, the golf asset management platform in Vilamoura, explains that “The renovations to the Old Course are in line with the long-term vision of improving quality, sophistication and the customer experience. These improvements are specifically aimed at maintaining high standards in golf facilities and services, and reinforcing Vilamoura’s image as a first-class golf destination.”

Following the completion of the improvements to the course, a new Clubhouse is due to open in November, which will include improvements to all the facilities, such as the golf store, the lounge, the restaurant, the bar and the terrace area, giving it a classic and elegant look that enhances the legacy of the course.

“All renovations are meticulously planned to respect the classic design and legacy of the course, while introducing improvements that enhance the overall golfing experience. By carefully balancing the old with the new, the renovation ensures that the course remains a beloved destination for golfers,” adds Nuno Sepúlveda.

The greens and fairways will receive careful maintenance, the bunkers will be improved with new sand and the tee boxes will have a new type of grass planted, Bermuda grass, which will level out the roots and make the tee boxes environmentally sustainable and of premium quality. There has also been a complete transformation of the buggy tracks, now built in wall-to-wall concrete. A notable aspect of this action is the sustainable approach adopted: the concrete removed from the old paths was crushed and reused as a base for the new paths, and the earth removed from the ground during this intervention was stored, sieved and reused in the final finish.

The overall appearance of the golf course will have more definition between the playing areas and the iconic landscape between the pine trees. This definition will have a significant impact on both appearance and quality, with the fairways receiving more sunlight.

The practice course will also be upgraded and state-of-the-art technology will be introduced, allowing for various training sessions and experiences that meet the highest expectations of all golfers.
